Moving to a bushland property last year has meant that I am finally able to commit to a few simple and worthwhile green resolutions for 2012. So whilst the rest of the team here in the office are trying (not very hard I might add) to stay off sugar or cut back the beers, I’ll be pottering around in the garden, with a beer in hand, doing my bit for the local environment.

Here are my top 5 green resolutions for 2012:

  • Start a compost bin. I’ve bought a big plastic compost bin from my local hardware store and that’s where all my kitchen scraps, leaves and newspapers will be going from now on. But no meat and bread – I don’t want to encourage rats!
  • Build a worm farm. I’ve ordered a kit online with a huge bag of worms to get me started. They’ll be fed scraps and in return will give me the best organic juices to use on my other green project.
  • Start a veggie garden. The neighbours and I have chatted about setting up an organic food exchange program, we’ll swap veggies and fruits and this way I won’t be stuck eating pickled carrots all year round. there are some neighbours I won’t share with, however, so I’ll be putting up netting to stop the possums and brush turkeys from helping themselves to the fruits of my labour.
  • Plant more native trees and plants. Imported species are crowding out some of our beautiful native vegetation.  More local plants will encourage local birds to come back – which will give me something else to watch other than my colleagues trying to avoid the lolly jar.
  • Become a bush-care volunteer. My local council runs bush care volunteer days so I’ll be going along to do my bit and commune with my neighbours at the same time.

I’ll bet my resolutions sound a whole lot more fun than dodging the lolly jar. Let me know what your green resolutions are: email me at jan.rieche@greencollartalent.com.au
